The contemplation of Giannos is fanatically focused on the study of landscape; even better, on deepening its structure and identifying the dynamics encapsulated within its external tranquility. Ten years ago, the painter surprised with a series of landscapes that were outside the accepted and known. With swift, broad strokes and rhythmic movements that write and rewrite the folds of the earth or the eternal pulse of the sea, he rendered a personal space, full of intensity and sensibility. It was his own contribution to the age-old theme of landscape, with a radically reformed perspective that ultimately resulted in a truly loving painting.
In these paintings, there usually works a core, an "event" that explodes and fills the space abundantly. To achieve this result, Apostolos Giannos will appropriate many languages. The acute observation of Impressionism that, however, sees things from the outside, the passion of Expressionism that addresses them from within, the instinct of Surrealism, and finally the principles of abstract landscape painting.
And it is truly curious how a creator more emotional than cerebral managed to integrate such a heterogeneous, historical material into his personal idiom. Even more so, since Giannos' landscapes do not bear specific geographical characteristics but refer both to the landscapes of the world and to the images that sleep within the painter's subconscious and demonstrate the sensuous relationship that broadly connects him to the space. It is essentially about the imagery of a place, more of a manifestation of the functions of imagination than of the actual. The shapes or abstract reductions clearly underline the personal character of the works.
