It has all the protections such as a safety valve that cuts off the gas when the flame goes out, an O2 sensor, and a tilt sensor. It does not smell when operating with propane. However, I would never buy it again for basic reasons. 1) The front wheels bent! Just from the weight of the 10-liter bottle. The heater tilts like the Tower of Pisa, but forward! They are supported by an unacceptably thin metal sheet that is full of large oval holes, which further worsen its strength. The wheels constantly sink sideways as if in butter... into the metal sheet. The rear wheels are supported by a separate sturdy metal sheet that also holds the bottle. 2) It has a very sensitive oxygen detector (even if you have an interior door open) that immediately and almost daily shuts off the heater for about 12 hours!! It won't even light with a lighter afterward! Unacceptable.
