Born in a rural village in Kenya in 1940, Wangari Maathai was already an iconoclast as a child, determined to get an education, even though most African girls at the time were illiterate. In her remarkable and inspiring autobiography, she narrates her studies with Catholic missionaries, earning undergraduate and master's degrees in the United States, and how she became the first woman to earn a PhD and head a university department in Kenya. She recounts her many conflicts with the harsh government of Daniel arap Moi and the political and personal reasons that led her, in 1977, to found the Green Belt Movement, which expanded from Kenya across Africa and helps restore indigenous forests, while supporting rural women by paying them to plant trees in their villages. Maathai's extraordinary bravery and determination helped transform Kenya's government into a democracy, where she now serves as Deputy Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, as well as a member of Parliament. Ultimately, her achievements were internationally recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in recognition of her “contribution to sustainable development, human rights, and peace.” In "Unbowed," we encounter an extraordinarily charismatic and humble woman, whose Remarkable story brings an inspiring message of hope. It is an exceptional story, spanning different worlds and changing times, revealing what courage, determination, resilience, and humor of a good woman can achieve; how something as small as planting a sapling and watering it can make a difference in the world.
