In my review, I refer to its performance in (mainly offline) games and its noise on a desktop PC.
I am very satisfied with the drive, especially regarding its performance, and personally, I am not bothered by any of its negatives, but I will mention some that you might not have thought of at first.
I got the 4TB version for 116 euros and I have it in my own PC, which is on the desk next to me, and I use it for space expansion so I can throw in there anything that takes up space from videos, download movies, and keep older games. I know it is a NAS drive and has some differences from others, but I wanted it because of its performance, which tears it up at 220-250MB/s.
I didn't go for the Barracuda because even though it was 25€ cheaper at the time and is quieter, I have heard that the Barracuda had high failure rates, where it actually failed. If you go for 8TB, get the EXOS for 160-170€ which is very VFM. It has the same chassis as the Ironwolf pro.
Regarding OBS screen recording directly to the drive, there is absolutely no issue. It is perfect, I would say.
I was incredibly impressed by the speed of the drive in games as well, since from some comparisons I have seen on YouTube, a common pattern in loading games was that the HDD took 1:40 minutes, a SATA SSD 25-30 seconds, and an NVME M.2 SSD about 15-20 seconds. Keeping this in mind, I tried loading some games myself, and really NONE except one took me more than 40 seconds to load (instead of 1m 40s), and sometimes it loaded within 30 seconds, which seemed incredibly fast for an HDD. We are talking about AAA games like Forza Horizon 4 & 5, Watch Dogs Legion, AC Odyssey, Cyberpunk, and Uncharted 4. The one that took a bit longer was Alan Wake 2, but to be honest, this game is incredibly demanding in everything, and it is something different from many other games. What will take a bit longer compared to an SSD is updating the games, e.g., via Steam, because it will apply the update for a longer time (e.g., 10 extra minutes if it is a 50GB game), which does not bother me.
One negative that fortunately does not bother me, but may annoy others, is that it makes quite a bit of noise because it is a NAS (you probably already know this about this drive). If you have a relatively new PC that is silent, you will hear it. When it is idle, it is okay (it still makes noise but very little), but if it is downloading something or reading constantly and you are sitting next to it without speakers or headphones, it sounds like it is constantly grinding. It is definitely 3 times noisier than regular HDDs.
That's it. It was definitely worth it at 100 to 110€ if you wanted the extra space at a good price. Otherwise, if you don't like HDDs, your next immediately better options are M2 SSDs at 2TB, like the Lexar NM790 SSD and the Western Digital SN770 SSD, whose prices range from 110-120€.
Στη κριτικη μου κανω αναφορα στην αποδοση του σε (Offline κυριως) παιχνιδια και στον θορυβο του σε σταθερο PC.
Ειμαι πολυ ικανοποιημενος με τον δισκο, ειδικα οσον αφορα την αποδοση του και προσωπικα δε με απασχολει τιποτα απο τα αρνητικα του, αλλα θα σας αναφερω καποια που μπορει να μη σκεφτηκατε με τη πρωτη.
Πηρα την εκδωση των 4TB στα 116 ευρω και τον εχω σε δικο μου PC που ειναι πανω στο γραφειο διπλα μου και τον εχω για επεκταση χωρου ωστε να μπορω να πεταω εκει οτι μου επιανε χωρο απο βιντεο, να κατεβαζω ταινιες και να εχω εκει πιο παλια παιχνιδια. Ξερω οτι ειναι NAS δισκος και εχει καποιες διαφορες με αλλους, αλλα τον ηθελα λογω του performance του, που στα 220-250MB/s σκηζει.
Δεν πηγα στον Barracuda επειδη παρολο που τοτε ητανε 25€ παρακατω και ειναι πιο ησυχος, εχω ακουσει οτι ο Barracuda ειχε υψηλά ποσοστα αποτυχιας, οπου τα επαιξε δηλαδη. Αμα πατε στα 8TB, παρτε και τον EXOS στα 160-170€ που ειναι πολυ VFM. Ειναι το ιδιο σασι με τον Ironwolf pro.
Οσον αφορα OBS screen recording απευθειας στον δισκο, δεν εχει κανενα απολυτως θεμα. Ειναι τελειο θα ελεγα.
Μου εκανε απιστευτη εντυπωση η ταχυτητα του δισκου και στα παιχνιδια, καθως απο καποιες συγκρισεις που εχω δει στο Youtube, ενα συχνο μοτιβο στη φορτωση παιχνιδιων ηταν ο HDD να θελει 1:40 λεπτα, ενας SATA SSD 25-30 δευτερολεπτα, και ενας NVME Μ.2 SSD καπου στα 15-20 δευτερολεπτα.
Εχοντας αυτο στο νου μου, δοκιμαζω να φορτωσω και εγω καποια παιχνιδια, και πραγματικα ΚΑΝΕΝΑ εκτος απο ενα, δε μου πηρε πανω απο 40 δευτερολεπτα να φορτωσει (αντι για 1λ 40δ) και καποιες φορες φορτωσε μεσα σε 30δευτερα που μου φανηκε απιστευτα γρηγορο για HDD. Μιλαμε για AAA παιχνιδια οπως Forza Horizon 4 & 5, Watch Dogs Legion, AC Odyssey, Cyberpunk και Uncharted 4. Το ενα που πηρε λιγο ωρα ηταν το Alan Wake 2, αλλα για να λεμε την αληθεια, αυτο το παιχνιδι ειναι απιστευτα απαιτητικο σε ολα, και ειναι κατι διαφορετικο απο πολλα αλλα παιχνιδια.
Αυτο που θα παρει λιγο παραπανω σε σχεση με εναν SSD ειναι να κανει update τα παιχνιδια, πχ μεσω Steam, επειδη θα κανει apply το update παραπανω ωρα (πχ 10 εξτρα λεπτα αν ειναι ενα παιχνιδι των 50GB) που δε με αποσχολει.
Ενα αρνητικο που εμενα δε με πειραζει ευτυχως, αλλα μπορει να ενοχλησει αλλους ειναι το οτι κανει αρκετο θορυβο επειδη ειναι NAS (μαλλον το εχετε μαθει ηδη για αυτον τον δισκο). Αν εχετε σχετικα νεο PC το οποιο ειναι αθορυβο, θα τον ακουτε. Οταν ειναι idle ειναι ενταξει (παλι ακουγεται αλλα πολυ λιγο) αλλα αμα κατεβαζει κατι ή διαβαζει μονημως και καθεστε διπλα χωρις ηχεια ή ακουστικα, ακουγεται λες και σκαληζει μονημως. Ειναι σιγουρα 3 φορες πιο θορυβοδης απο τους απλους HDD δισκους.
Αυτα. Αξιζε σιγουρα στα 100 με 110€ αμα θελατε τον εξτρα χωρο σε καλη τιμη. Αλλιως αμα δε σας αρεσουν οι HDD, οι επομενοι αμεσως καλυτερη επιλογη σας ειναι οι M2 ssd στα 2TB πχ ο Lexar NM790 SSD και ο Western Digital SN770 SSD, των οποιων οι τιμες κυμαινονται στα 110-120€.
