For over 30 years I have been using a red flashlight for stargazing-astrophotography and I have changed flashlights according to technological advancements. My experience and the recent testing I did on several flashlights can be summarized as follows:
A) If you want to buy an ultra-light! and top-quality rechargeable AND WATERPROOF headlamp, but it is expensive (at €42), you can look for the NiteCore NU25 (preferably the older model with the 2 red brightness levels).
B) For those who want a much cheaper rechargeable headlamp, they can buy the SUPERFIRE HL23. This is the one I have chosen myself after testing dozens and it does its job excellently!!! (as long as one learns its multiple operating modes by reading the 100% informative manual)
The SUPERFIRE HL23 headlamp turns on red with a simple double click without necessarily going through the white light mode! It also has brightness levels and a motion sensor. It charges via USB with a built-in rechargeable battery.
If you are a caver, ask the experts for this job and buy another much more expensive one!
