Rimsky-Korsakov wrote this book for his students on the geography of harmony at the Imperial Chapel in St. Petersburg, due to his dissatisfaction with other harmony methods of the time. His methodology in this book promotes the establishment of a comprehensive foundation in harmony, making it ideal as a teaching tool.

This edition of the Practical Handbook of Harmony, reissued more than a hundred years after its first printing, retains the original content of the 1885 edition while adopting a new layout and design for better organization. The book was successful in music programs in the late 19th century. Its content will also be equally successful in today's and future music programs.
