Unknown Aspects of the Asia Minor Catastrophe
After the much-discussed book "The Last Days of the High Commissioner," which focuses on the role of the High Commissioner of Smyrna, Aristides Stergiadis, in the Asia Minor Catastrophe, Konstantinos D. Vlassis returns through ARCHIVE publications with a new work that aims to shed light on the socio-political and military realities of the time.
The starting point for this book is set in August 1922, when the newspaper "Kathimerini" published, with a difference of a few days, the historical articles "Oikade" and "The Pomeranian," both of which stirred a storm of reactions within the intensely polarized atmosphere of the National Division era and became etched in collective memory since then.
What were the real motives and the stance regarding the Asia Minor issue of Georgios Vlachos, the publisher of the newspaper, and within what framework was "Kathimerini" led to publish "Oikade," an article that supposedly called for the army to withdraw from Asia Minor amidst the Turkish attack that would dismantle the Greek front? A thorough, documented research that attempts to illuminate unknown aspects and unpredictable parameters of the tragic events of the Asia Minor Catastrophe.
