Who would have imagined that in one of its busiest avenues, on Alexandras Avenue at number 59, in the semi-basement of an apartment building, lived and worked spiritually, guiding souls to God, a spiritual figure so humble, so unremarkable, so simple! The elder is none other than Father Antonios Gkikiza. An elder like those we read about in the Gerontikon, with deep humility, gentle kindness, great discernment, and much love.
The semi-basement was a small apartment with little light, very poor, simple. So simple that the thought occurred that perhaps the stable of St. John the Russian was better. This was the elder's cell.
The elder had one purpose, to help every troubled, weary soul with a fatherly, simple, loving way of affection, understanding, and prayer. One desire in his soul, the spiritual communication with God. Although he lived in Athens, he was far from worldly matters. Only the prayer "for the whole world" existed in his heart. Thus, the semi-basement became a place of spiritual light, prayer, repentance, and rest for those who visited or served the elder.
