Description

Autobiography of Alan Johnson, winner of the Parliamentary Award, best memoir by an MP in 2016. From the condemned slums of Southam Street in West London to the corridors of power in Westminster, Alan Johnson's multi-award-winning autobiography charts an incredible journey, almost unbelievable for today's Britain. This third volume recounts his early political struggles as a union leader, where his negotiating skills and charismatic style were soon noticed by Tony Blair and other senior figures in the Labour Party.

As a result, Alan is selected to stand in the Hull West and Hessle constituency and enters Parliament as an MP following the Labour Party's election victory in May 1997. This autobiography is not a self-glorifying narrative about the political happenings of Westminster. Supporting the struggles of his constituents, the fishermen of Hull and their families for justice, comes more naturally to Alan than the Byzantine complexities of the parliamentary process. Naturally, he succeeds and advances to various ministerial positions, reaching the office of Home Secretary in 2009.

In "The Long and Winding Road", Alan's characteristic honesty and authenticity stand out in every word. His book introduces you to a world both familiar and strange: this is politics as you've never seen it before…
