The Brazilian Roberto Athayde wrote his most popular play, "Apareceu a Margarida (Margarita Has Arrived)," at the age of 21, which has the subtitle: "A tragicomic monologue for a passionate woman."
The unique heroine of the play, Miss Margarita, is a sixth-grade teacher at an elementary school, and the audience consists of her students. This female monologue shocks from the beginning and continues to shock until the end.
Miss Margarita intimidates, seduces, commands, dominates, and alternately argues, confides, attempts to seduce, and tries to teach her students to listen, but mainly to obey, during two class periods.
In a way, the meaning of the play is the relentless, immutable nature of tyranny, with the tyrant hammering at the oppressed in the same spot over and over, as Miss Margarita's techniques represent all the ways in which life can strip individuals of their identity and force them into compliance and submission... with blind and helpless obedience!
