Description

Extensive and bold, the fresco composition by George Kordis (b. 1956) on the frieze of the third floor of the building of the School of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in the Zografou campus, is a contemporary artistic proposal.

Utilizing the style of religious iconography, without merely imitating its external forms, it employs a color palette derived from the multilectious ancient plain scale to serve its narrative.

The painter depicts episodes from the Odyssey, which are annotated at the bottom of the frieze with the capital-letter Homeric text that surrounds it from the beginning to the end of the representation.

The result appears to be absolutely in harmony with the space of its now permanent hosting. It converses here with the specific version of the monochromatic architecture of the School of Philosophy, a building designed in the 1960s.

Furthermore, it illuminates and enhances it: shaped forms, animated gestures, mannered elongations, miniature details—all are harmoniously and rhythmically composed.
