In "The Greek Vendee," a comprehensive record is made of the history of the official, state Security Battalions, which were formed by the last occupation government of Ioannis Rallis in 1943-44.
Their presence on the Greek scene is described in conjunction and parallel with the recording of the history of the period 1940-45, from the war of 1940-41, the events of the Occupation inside and outside Greece, the resistance and the occupation civil war, the December 1944 movement, and the country's return to political and constitutional legitimacy. With the sense of responsibility and sincerity that distinguishes him in all his previous works, the author describes and analyzes the events, without failing to judge their protagonists. Methodically and with documentation, without evasions and smoothing over, he presents the events and their protagonists.
Bougas does not try to remain indifferent, without personal opinion, when describing events, decisions, actions, or omissions that cost Greece and its people. With courage and historical accuracy, he presents a difficult subject, such as the Security Battalions, which are either avoided by the historians of the period or stoned using cliché characterizations that do not belong to them nor represent them. Similar is the treatment of British involvement in Greek affairs, inside and outside Greece, the material and economic aid to the armed resistance, and the treatment of the Greek government-in-exile by the British military and political authorities. The author, by presenting and interpreting these events, hopes to contribute to a more balanced collective memory of the history of the period 1940-45 regarding the national resistance, the Security Battalions, and the ambiguous role of Great Britain.
