A retrospective collection of works by Nobuyoshi Araki, selected by the artist himself, featuring decades of images across 512 pages of photographs. Initially published as a Limited Edition, this collection is re-released in a new format to celebrate TASCHEN's 40th anniversary. The curation delves deeply into Araki's most famous images: scenes on the streets of Tokyo, faces and food, colorful and sensual flowers, female genitalia, and the Japanese art of kinbaku, or bondage. Like girls tied but fearless and petals assuming suggestive shapes, Araki constantly plays with the motifs of submission and liberation, death and desire, and the slipperiness between calmness and shock. Describing his bondage photographs as “a collaboration between the subject and the photographer,” Araki seeks to approach his female subjects through photography, emphasizing the role of verbal conversation between himself and the model. In his native Japan, he has gained a cult status among many women who feel liberated by his willingness to photograph the expression of their desire.
