Description

A journey through epic Chinese history China, with its kung fu and tea, its sages and silk, has influenced gastronomy, trade, military strategy, aesthetics, and philosophy on a global scale for millennia. Chinese history is fascinatingly chaotic. It is rife with periods of prosperity and violent uprisings, with revolutionaries, establishment figures, dissenters, and significant personalities. But its women, from ancient warriors to twentieth-century suffragettes, have also shaped it decisively, while its ancient ghosts, administrative corruption, and discord continue to haunt today's People's Republic. With narrative skill and historical accuracy, Linda Jaivin offers the essence of this complex history: in a book that is enjoyable to read and contains everything you need to know, she reveals a country of astonishing variety, at the forefront of global developments. PRAISE FOR THE BOOK The revealing portrait of a superpower, from antiquity to modern dominance. Julia Lovell, Professor of History, London University Jaivin knows well how to highlight important details and turn an extremely unwieldy history into an absolutely informative and enjoyable read. The Sydney Morning Herald China's great history has found the narrator it needed. Stan Grant, author

Many, many years ago, as a Chinese cosmogonic myth tells us, the primordial chaos condensed into an egg, inside which the complementary cosmic energies, Yin, 陰, and Yang, 陽, surrounded the hairy, horned giant Pangu. Eighteen thousand years passed. Pangu hatched, fully formed, holding an axe with which he separated Yin and Yang. Yin became the earth beneath his feet and Yang the sky. Pangu grew taller, so the earth and sky moved apart. Pangu died, and his flesh became soil, his sweat rain, his breath wind. His blood became rivers and seas. His eyes became the sun and the moon. From his hair grew plants and trees, and the fleas from his fur became animals and humans.

For those who don't know Chinese, please, stop taking works of foreign authors and translating their books. You can't pronounce X as Ks, for goodness' sake. There are other such issues in the translation of this book. Also, something very important that someone mentioned in another history book and I want to agree as it happens in this book too, written by a very feminist and generally politicized author (pro-Hong Kong)..: "Impartiality is a basic principle in historiography." If you write with your own beliefs and have such fixations... you're done for!
