Read an excerpt

Although the Jews believed they were the chosen people, they did not lead an easy life. They experienced frequent humiliations: they were conquered and exiled – yet they never doubted that God existed and cared for them. If misfortune befell them, they concluded that they had not obeyed the laws as they should have, that they had caused God's displeasure. Thus, in the Jewish religion, as in Christianity, religion and morality are closely connected, which is not the case with all religions. The Romans and Greeks had gods who behaved immorally, who had romantic relationships and schemed against one another. In Roman religion, the gods punished, but usually not for moral offenses; they might punish you because you did not perform your sacrifices correctly or as often as needed.
