The range 18-105mm is ideal for covering 95% of photographic needs (practically only telephoto is left out). With a fixed aperture of f/4, satisfactory speeds are achieved throughout the range. The impressive optical stabilization compensates for the absence of a larger aperture (e.g. f/2.8). Even at 105mm and in low light, I was able to take a clear photo handheld. I believe that the stabilizer gains at least 2-3 stops. However, the stabilizer proved even more important in video. In Full HD/4K videos, I previously had a strong problem with my prime lens because even the slightest shake became noticeable on the screen due to high resolution and frame rate. Finally, the video looks flawless and the zoom/focus is completely silent, even in complete isolation conditions. The colors are very vibrant and the sharpness is good. Regarding a previous negative evaluation of sharpness and distortion, I would like to comment that a zoom lens cannot be compared to a prime lens (e.g. 19mm or 30mm, etc.). There are certainly zoom lenses that combine low distortion, top sharpness, and are faster. However, if anyone knows such a lens that doesn't cost at least three times as much, please post it so I can buy it too. As for distortion, Lightroom automatically recognizes the lens and applies the appropriate correction profile with very good results. The most important advantage of the lens, however, is its weight and size. For its category, it is excellent and pairs very well with the small body of modern mirrorless cameras. This is something that you will see in practice has great value in grip and hand stability.
On the negative side, the focus and zoom rings have a very smooth feel, which is something I would prefer to be different (i.e. have a faster and "strict" response). Similarly, in power zoom, I would prefer a wider range of zoom in/out speeds, as I found it quite "conservative". These two factors limit creativity in video a bit. Finally, the autofocus speed is average and will not fully exploit the speed of your camera (if you have an a6000 or above). However, this did not bother me much until now.
Conclusion: for me, it is the best value for money E-mount general-purpose lens available today. I don't give it 5 stars because the enemy of the good is the best.
Το εύρος 18-105mm είναι ιδανικό για να καλύψει το 95% των φωτογραφικών αναγκών (πρακτικά μόνο το telephoto αφήνει απέξω). Με σταθερό διάφραγμα f/4 επιτυγχάνονται ικανοποιητικές ταχύτητες σε όλο το φάσμα. Το εντυπωσιακό optical stabilization αντισταθμίζει την απουσία ενός πιο μεγάλου διαφράγματος (π.χ. f/2,8). Ακόμα και στα 105mm και σε χαμηλό φωτισμό μπόρεσα να τραβήξω στο χέρι μία καθαρή φωτογραφία, θεωρώ ότι με το stabilizer κερδίζονται τουλάχιστον 2-3 stop. Το stabilizer όμως αποδείχθηκε ακόμα πιο σημαντικό στο video. Στα Full HD/4K videos είχα έντονο πρόβλημα παλαιότερα με τον prime φακό μου, γιατί λόγω μεγάλης ευκρίνειας και υψηλού frame rate ακόμα και το πιο μικρό τρεμόπαιγμα γινόταν έντονα αισθητό στην οθόνη. Επιτέλους το video δείχνει άψογο και το zoom/focus είναι απολύτως αθόρυβα, ούτε σε συνθήκες πλήρους απομόνωσης δεν ακούγονται. Τα χρώματα είναι πολύ ζωντανά και το sharpness καλό. Σε προηγούμενη αρνητική αξιολόγηση για το sharpness και την παραμόρφωση θα ήθελα να σχολιάσω ότι ένας zoom φακός δε μπορεί να συγκρίνεται με έναν φακό σταθερού μήκους (π.χ. 19mm ή 30mm κλπ). Σαφώς και υπάρχουν zoom φακοί όπου συνδυάζουν μικρή παραμόρφωση, κορυφαίο sharpness και είναι και πιο γρήγοροι. Όποιος ξέρει όμως έναν τέτοιο φακό που να μην κοστίζει τουλάχιστον τα 3πλάσια, παρακαλώ να τον αναρτήσει για να τον αγοράσω και εγώ. Ως προς την παραμόρφωση άλλωστε το Lightroom αναγνωρίζει αυτόματα τον φακό και εφαρμόζει το κατάλληλο προφίλ διόρθωσης με πολύ καλό αποτέλεσμα. Το πιο σημαντικό πλεονέκτημα του φακού πάντως είναι το βάρος και το μέγεθός του. Για την κατηγορία του είναι κορυφαίος και δένει πάρα πολύ καλά με το μικρό σώμα των σύγχρονων mirrorless μηχανών. Κάτι που θα δείτε στην πράξη ότι έχει μεγάλη αξία στο grip και στη σταθερότητα του χεριού.
Στα αρνητικά, τα focus και zoom rings έχουν πολύ απαλή αίσθηση, αυτό είναι κάτι που εγώ θα προτιμούσα διαφορετικό (σ.σ. να είχαν ήταν πιο γρήγορη και "αυστηρή" αντίδραση). Όπως επίσης και στο power zoom θα προτιμούσα μεγαλύτερο εύρος ταχύτητας zoom in/out, το βρήκα αρκετά "συντηρητικό". Αυτά τα δύο περιορίζουν λίγο στο video τα περιθώρια για δημιουργικότητα. Τέλος, η ταχύτητα εστίασης είναι μέτρια και δεν θα εκμεταλλευτεί στο έπακρο την ταχύτητα της μηχανής σας (αν έχετε α6000 και πάνω). Κάτι που όμως δε με προβλημάτισε ιδιαίτερα μέχρι σήμερα.
Συμπέρασμα: για μένα ο καλύτερος value for money Ε-mount φακός γενικής χρήσης που υπάρχει σήμερα. Δε βάζω 5 αστέρια γιατί εχθρός του καλού είναι το καλύτερο.
