The OM-5 Mirrorless Camera from OM SYSTEM is a compact and durable Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera suitable for a variety of photo and video needs.

Featuring a 20.4 MP Live MOS sensor and an updated TruePic IX image processor, the camera provides fast continuous shooting up to 30 fps, as well as DCI and UHD 4K video recording. The sensor and processor also offer a sensitivity range up to ISO 25600, while an advanced 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system compensates for up to 6.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Beyond imaging, the sensor design incorporates 121 phase-detection points, all of which are cross-type, along with 121 contrast-detection areas for fast and accurate focusing and subject tracking performance.

Covering a useful and familiar range with a sleek form, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm f/4 PRO is a 24-90mm equivalent zoom for Micro Four Thirds cameras. Distinguished by its constant f/4 maximum aperture, this lens achieves a balance between a bright design and an ultra-compact build that suits its use in everyday situations.

Numerous specialized elements are incorporated into the optical design, which help suppress spherical aberrations, chromatic fringes, and distortion in order to produce sharp, color-accurate imagery. A ZERO coating is also available, which controls flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the optics is a Movie & Still compatible autofocus system, which achieves fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance and a maximum magnification of 0.25x throughout the zoom range to suit working with close-up subjects.

After a year of use and coming from the OMD EM10iii, I can say that it is a very good purchase. Excellent computational capabilities (high-resolution image without a tripod, live-ND), especially considering the price, plenty of customization, many buttons for direct access to various functions, lots of HDR options, in general it has a ton of features if someone is willing to carefully read the manual and explore its chaotic menu.

Charging via micro-USB is very convenient (although it only charges with its own cable from a power bank), especially considering that it is a rather power-hungry camera. When it says the battery lasts for 300-350 shots, it really does, as it does not have a flash, which is usually factored into consumption during measurements. I was used to the same battery lasting 500+ shots with the EM10 and it makes me a bit anxious when I see it already halfway after 150-200 photos.

I haven't pushed the AF too much, but if you want a camera for fast action (e.g. birds in flight) you probably need to look for something more advanced in that area. The starryAF works just fine even with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7, which generally struggles to focus in the dark.

The IBIS is good, but personally I don't notice a difference compared to the EM10iii. I haven't really tested it with video, but with the ultra-wide at 8mm, movement at the corners is particularly pronounced.

I have nothing to say about the screen and EVF. Personally, I prefer a tilting screen over the rotating mechanism, but OK, it's by no means a deal-breaker. I hope it proves to be more durable (on both Olympus cameras I had before the OM5, after about 3 years I needed to replace the screen ribbons).

The colors are beautiful straight out of camera, especially in vivid mode, but in LR the raws seem to lean towards green (in general, the raws have a quite different color profile from the EM10iii).

Also, aesthetically it is beautiful (if that is a criterion) and extremely ergonomic.

This review is about the colour: Black

I bought the OM System OM-5 in September and after months of use, I can say with certainty that it is an excellent camera. I am a professional photographer, so I am quite demanding with my equipment, and the OM-5 manages to meet my expectations for both professional use and personal creative photography.
The image quality is outstanding, with vibrant colors and detail that impresses, even in low light conditions. The built-in image stabilization (IBIS) is among the best I have used, ideal for handheld shots and video, even without a tripod. Its compact size and lightweight design make it perfect for travel and outdoor shooting, while its resistance to water, dust, and low temperatures offers great security for use in challenging conditions.
I particularly appreciate the unique features it has, such as Live Composite for creative night shots and High-Res Shot that allows you to create high-resolution photos. These features enrich the photography experience and give you tools to experiment creatively.
If I had to find something negative, I would say that the autofocus system on fast movements could be improved. Nevertheless, it is not something that has limited me in my shots, even in demanding professional conditions.
In this price category, I don't believe there is anything that combines so much quality, durability, and ease of use. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, the OM System OM-5 is an excellent choice that is worth every euro. I highly recommend it!

At a price under €1000, there is nothing better. Many features, ibis that makes you smile, waterproof and sturdy construction. Its size truly makes it all around. The only downside is the lack of a type c port, but it's not something so discouraging.
