Description

In one of the most remote corners of the Greek seas lies the tiny island of Stamfani, which together with the islet of Arpyia forms the Strofades complex. It is a small island with an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers, 27 miles south of Zakynthos. Although unknown to most Greeks, it hosts a unique monument, a fortified monastic complex with a church that has its roots in the 13th century. The monastery suffered severe damage from many earthquakes and today stands abandoned. The last monk died in 2017, after 38 years of dedication and almost isolation.

This book aims to speak to the world about the Holy Monastery of Strofades and to intensify interest in its preservation. At its core are the words of its last monk, Father Grigoris, who "guides" the reader through this historic monastery, as well as the natural beauties of the island, as depicted through the wonderful photographs of Robert McCabe.

The testimonies of the shipmaster who brought supplies to Father Grigoris, as well as the last lighthouse keeper who was once his only companion on the island, "dress" these photographs with words - as do the texts on the history, geology, natural environment, and architecture of the Strofades. The Strofades will be forever etched in the memory of anyone who reads the book, and no one will remain unmoved by their historic castle-monastery.
