This is my first game of the series, even though I had heard about it for years. I decided to start with this one since it is cooperative and, after Paleo, we have been won over by this type of game.

On the positive side, I would mention the beautifully designed and high-quality pieces and the very good implementation of the tile-matching idea (since I had no experience with the classic version). I consider it somewhat challenging even from the first level. It intrigues you to play again to win and makes you think.

On the negative side, I would mention the ambiguity of the rules and some gray areas in them (maybe those with experience from the base game don't have this issue), which makes you search for answers online, not always successfully. The biggest negative, though, and the main reason I am deducting a star—not so much for the previous issue—is that it doesn't "immerse" you in any story. The concept remains just an excuse to achieve a goal. Maybe Paleo "spoiled" us, where every decision puts you in the spirit of the game, while here it's simply a matter of "technical approach" to achieve the objective. Since I also have Settlers of Catan, I don't feel attracted to try the base game as well. Maybe it's because we usually play as two and not with a big group—maybe it would be different then.

A very nice collaborative variation of the classic Carcassonne (Castles of Mystras). The rules are understandable and offer different levels of difficulty, so that both beginners and advanced players can enjoy it and it doesn't become boring. The scoring follows the rules of the base game for roads and cities, except now the goal is not for one player to collect the most points, but for everyone to collectively gather the necessary points before all the tiles are placed or all the ghosts are placed on the board. It helps develop critical thinking and strategy, as sometimes points may need to be sacrificed to remove ghosts. The tiles and the scoring board are of good quality and have beautiful illustrations, just like in the classic game. One negative aspect is that although it has 6 sets of tokens, it can be played with up to five players, as one token needs to be "sacrificed" to make the marker on the scoring board. However, this can easily be overcome by using something else as a marker. It also comes with a second instruction booklet that explains the rules for combining it with the classic version of the game.
