Description

A poignant and humorous biography of Jennette McCurdy, known from the series iCarly and Sam & Cat, which recounts her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she regained control of her life.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first audition. Her mother's dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette did everything to please her. Thus, she followed what her mother called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She underwent extensive home makeovers, while her mother reprimanded her with comments like “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? Do you think Dakota Fanning doesn’t color hers?” She even had her mother showering her until the age of sixteen and sharing her diaries, emails, and all her earnings.

In the book "I’m Glad My Mom Died," Jennette describes all this in raw and candid detail—just as she recounts what happens when the dream finally comes true. She is cast on a new Nickelodeon series titled iCarly and suddenly finds herself entangled in the spotlight. Although her mother is thrilled, Jennette is filled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, manifested in eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues worsen when, shortly after her initiative in the follow-up Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Eventually, after discovering therapy and deciding to quit acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she truly wants.

With renewed honesty and dark humor, "I’m Glad My Mom Died" is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of self-care.

The author was a former actress and a "child star" in a well-known teenage TV series on Nickelodeon. This book is an autobiography, for those who have not met the character "Sam" from the teenage series and possibly reminds them of carefree years, it is quite a shocking read. It touches on sensitive topics of toxic relationships, eating disorders, and the not-so-glamorous life that child celebrities experience. It keeps the reader's interest with honesty and minimal effort of censorship or manipulation of situations. The title, definitely controversial, is justified, however, with the completion of the book.
