NOMINATED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE
It's 1985, and we are in a town in Ireland. Christmas is approaching, a busy time for Bill Furlong, a timber and coal supplier. Early one morning, he delivers an order to the local convent – and is confronted by the darkness and the complicit silence of a town under the church's control.
In a small Irish town, Bill Furlong tries to fulfill his customers' orders as the year comes to an end. At the helm of a small company and the father of five girls, he has managed to build his life on his own. His mother, a servant, became pregnant at fifteen but, unlike what usually happened, they did not throw her out of the house with her baby. In this respect, Bill was luckier than other children.
On Christmas Eve, Bill makes his final delivery to the convent – where, under the pretext of training them, the nuns exploit girls of "loose morals" and make them work in the convent's laundry. What Bill discovers there, and the difficult decision it leads him to, is narrated by the author with such restrained grace that this beautiful text becomes both enigmatic and shocking. A masterpiece that has justly been praised by critics.
WHAT THE PRESS SAID
The carefully crafted details in the characters, the environment, memory, and dramatic moments weave a story you will want to read again and again. Its deceptively simple language is flawless. Boston Globe
This remarkable short story somehow defies the weight of the subject and hovers in the everyday, bright present. The details take on substance with a supernatural clarity. The white light of a winter afternoon, the haze over a river, a woman opening the door of a bakery, a child holding his father's hand: We see these images and feel their persistent presence as we enter the life of an ordinary man in an everyday place. Wall Street Journal
