The French thinker Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592), when he withdrew to his tower, leaving his position in the Parliament of Bordeaux, while remaining a public figure, threatened but also respected during the Religious Wars that shook France for decades, decided to write a book of "good faith," dedicated "to the personal benefit of relatives and friends.
Enriching and expanding his text over the last twenty-two years of his life with topics created by the flow of life, daily questions alongside essential ones, he added to world literature the "essay," meaning the successive attempts to provide answers, while not lacking in doubts. In any case, the question "What do I know?" (so that I know what I answer) remained present, a game that has not ceased to seek its players.
In conversation with personalities of his time, referencing ancient Greek and Latin thought, Montaigne did not shy away from having the three "books" of his essays listed in the Index of Forbidden Books of the Catholic Church, where they stayed for centuries. This edition is the first complete translation of the work into Greek and is supported by footnotes and comments.
