Description

The book is bilingual (in Greek and English). We are in Paris, 1947. Antonin Artaud appears in a crowded auditorium. The lecture he is about to give is titled "Van Gogh, the Suicide of Society." The entire high society of Paris has flooded the space to hear him.

Artaud passionately defends an idea: Vincent Van Gogh's suicide had its executioners. In this theatrical play, Artaud hides behind a mask to talk about himself. It is the mask of Van Gogh, whom Artaud admired greatly and identified with.

This element, that the hero gradually reveals himself on stage while constantly representing someone else and never speaking about himself, is the main dramatic structure of the work. The work Artaud / Van Gogh was written in 2015 and is the first part of the trilogy of plays – The Cenci Family (2015), Bone (2022) – created by Ioli Andreas and Aris Asproulis inspired by the life and work of the groundbreaking and avant-garde artist and thinker of the 20th century Antonin Artaud, and is published by Kapa Publishing.
