Description

Ecofeminism is not just another form of feminism. It is one of the most important aspects of contemporary environmental thought, with a history of at least half a century. The theory of ecofeminism began to take shape in the 1970s and draws its roots from other progressive and radical movements of that decade and the previous one.

Today, decades before these voices emerged, some ecofeminists are trying to provide a comprehensive feminist proposal for ecology, while others focus on highlighting those aspects of the environmental crisis that most affect women. While it does not end there, the core position of ecofeminism is that the exploitation suffered by women from men is analogous to the exploitation that nature has suffered from humans.

However, it is true that ecofeminists do not only focus on the oppression faced by women but also on the oppression experienced by various groups, emphasizing the need to connect the ecofeminist perspective with other struggles, such as those for LGBTQ rights, non-human animals, Black lives, etc. What is crucial to emphasize is that ecofeminism aims for both ecological and social change simultaneously.

Thus, ecofeminists understand how other forms of oppression interact with each other. We can, therefore, see in the ideas of ecofeminism a broader political and ecological vision.
