Description & Specifications

As you take on the responsibility of raising your children not only in the real world but also in a parallel digital one, you may feel unprepared and lost. You worry that they might become addicted to video games, fall victim to cyberbullying, or get lost in social media. Therefore, you decide to distance them from devices.

Would you, however, prevent your children from learning to read to protect them from exposure to harmful rhetoric? In this book, Richard Culatta, an expert in educational technology and advisor to the Obama administration, explains that we cannot and should not hide the digital world from children, nor is it enough to merely warn them about what they should not do online.

Instead, he presents the framework and tools that help them cultivate the five essential skills that every responsible digital citizen needs to possess:

  • Balance: to understand when and how much it is healthy to use technology
  • Information: to discern between true and false information
  • Inclusion: to treat others online with respect and kindness
  • Participation: to use technology to enhance relationships within the family and bonds in the community
  • Awareness: to monitor and create safe digital spaces for others.

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT THE BOOK A useful guide for any parent concerned about the impact of technology on their child's development. Publishers Weekly

A timely book, as many of us struggle to guide our children through the modern digital minefield. Culatta avoids the trap of preaching about the ills of technology; rather, he guides us down a safe path. Lord Jim Knight, Chair of the British Centre for Accelerating Social Technology, former Minister of School Education

A book with practical advice on how to teach our children not only to become safe and kind digital citizens but also generally better people… an essential read for those of us investing in the future. Esther Wojcicki, author.

Read an excerpt

Cyberbullying is not only easier, but the perpetrator does not even face the consequences. The virtual world allows us to do and say things we would never attempt in person, simply because the distance protects us from experiencing firsthand and in real time the results of our actions. We do not see in the other person's face how much they hurt, nor do we notice the disapproval of those present; we are not punished by the authorities – all these factors prevent relentless behaviors in the real world. And since we have done almost nothing to teach our children that the consequences of digital behaviors are equally serious, sometimes even more serious, than the consequences of our behaviors in the real world, we have made no significant progress in solving the problem.
