In this study, through a multi-perspective and multi-faceted ethnography, the author captures expressions of the family reality of Greek adoptive parents who sought to acquire their child while balancing and crossing the different lines of race, color, class, and nationality.

The primary aim of the book is to examine how the movement of children across national borders constructs "new geographies of kinship," shaping new spaces and new ways of constructing and signifying parenthood and familial relationships.

Challenging the constitutive importance of biology in Western societies concerning the establishment of kinship relations, parents who choose to adopt their child from Ethiopia or Uganda develop strategic actions that allow them to negotiate a delicate balancing process between the biological and social components of kinship, and primarily defend the child's right to maintain and manage their multiple identities.

Through the dynamic articulation of ethnographic research with the anthropological analysis of both Greek legislative texts and International regulatory Conventions on children's rights and intercountry adoption, the book demonstrates that while national legislation on adoption can be analyzed as a "microphysics" of sovereign management by the state of matters concerning the private aspects of its citizens' lives, similarly, International Conventions can be perceived as a dominant example of governance on a global scale.

As it turns out, both levels of sovereign control, national and international, intertwine, ideologically vehicleing the protection of the "best interest of the child," aiming for the hegemonic imposition of Western rationality and Western moral values concerning the child, parental identity, and family organization.
