Digital storytelling is a relatively new form of art that uses music, imagery, video, and narration to create stories that are shared online. Its educational significance is substantial and it provides benefits to the educational process. Nevertheless, it is something new for Greek educational standards.
The creation of digital narratives within the educational system is feasible at all levels, from Kindergarten to University. Educators at all levels can use it in various ways, as long as they spark students' interest, capture their attention, motivate them, and highlight the creative talents of children as they begin to research and narrate their own stories.
Students develop communication skills, learn to express their opinions, structure narratives, and write for an audience, while simultaneously increasing knowledge and skills in computer use, combining various multimedia.
The book consists of two parts: The first part provides an overview of the necessity of digital storytelling in education and the technological means and techniques required for its creation. Educators need to understand its power and leverage it in the educational process.
It is important that when creating digital narratives, there be good oral storytelling, which has stood the test of millennia, is timeless, and with a few technological means can be transformed into digital. However, for there to be a story, students must write it, and writing is a primary tool in its creation. Immediately thereafter, they must think about which digital media they will use to support it and will gradually be led to digital literacy.
The second part focuses on the practical application of creating digital narrative stories in school. It describes and proposes detailed activities for educators, which have been successfully implemented with kindergarten students to produce digital narratives while simultaneously nurturing the oral and written language of children.
The accompanying DVD contains digital narratives for each letter of the alphabet created by kindergarten children using the "Alphabet Technique." Overall, this book provides detailed and practical guidelines for transforming simple and traditional stories into digital narratives.
