I met "Madam Sophia" in a village in Crete, when I was a small child, around 1950. I remember how beautiful she seemed to me then. I recall that when she hung the clothes on the lines, it looked as if she was dancing strange dances. And when she started singing while ironing, everything became different. It was as if they were smiling. As if they were shining...
Deep inside, I believed she was a witch. But I was very afraid to tell her. Many years passed... Once, I ran into her by chance in Athens. She invited me to her house, and there, amidst our conversation, she recalled her story.
"My life was a storm. A storm without mercy... Even I cannot understand how I endured. May God not give a person more than they can bear, my child..."
I tried to write this book as she would have written it if she knew how to read and write. As if she were keeping, let’s say, some kind of diary in this storm that showed no mercy...
