The Case Study House program (1945-66) was an exceptional and innovative event in the history of American architecture and remains unique to this day. The program, which focused on the Los Angeles area and supervised the design of 36 prototype homes, aimed at the accessible design of modern residences that could be built easily and economically during the post-war building boom. The driving force behind the program was the editor of Arts & Architecture, John Entenza, who supported modernization and had the right connections to attract some of the greatest talents in architecture, such as Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, and Eero Saarinen. Highly experimental, the program produced homes designed to revolutionize modern living, and it has had a strong influence on both American and international architecture during its existence and up to the present day. TASCHEN presents a monumental retrospective of the entire program with extensive documentation, brilliant period photographs, and for the houses that still exist, contemporary photographs as well as detailed plans and sketches.
