In 1964, photographer Harry Benson was invited by the photo editor of London's Daily Express newspaper to cover the Beatles' trip to Paris. This assignment marked the beginning of a career that would define Benson's reputation, providing some of the Beatles' most intimate photographs. In Paris, Benson captured the Fab Four amidst a pillow fight at the George V Hotel, a spontaneous moment that embodied the spirit of the band—Benson himself has described it as the best shot of his career. Later that year, he followed the band on their maiden U.S. tour, documenting their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, their meeting with Cassius Clay, and the Beatlemania hysteria in New York. Benson also photographed George Harrison's honeymoon in Barbados, captured the Beatles during their first film A Hard Day’s Night, and was present on the infamous 1966 tour when John Lennon declared that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus.” This reissue brings back the best of Benson's illuminating black-and-white Beatles portfolio. Complemented by excerpts and newspapers of the time, an introduction by the photographer himself adds captivating personal testimony to these iconic images of the greatest band in music history.
