Description

Climate, environment, history, and technology are transforming architecture worldwide. The second volume of the "Homes for Our Time" series documents this housing revolution and poses questions: What is the role of homes in our threatened world? How can they innovate? In Sri Lanka, Palinda Kannangara created the Frame Holiday Structure on a budget of $40,000. Built from steel stilts, exposed bricks, and wooden surfaces, the house can be easily dismantled and moved, adapting to the reality of the neighboring floodplain. Luciano Lerner Basso's Fortunata House in Brazil hosts the surrounding nature: it is built around a limited species tree and rests on stilts so as not to disrupt the forest floor. The Loom House by Miller Hull near Seattle has been described as "the world’s most environmentally ambitious home renovation" due to its reliance on recycled materials and efficient energy use. Modern architectural history has so far been examined mainly from a Western perspective and shaped by men. More than 60 buildings from Vietnam, South Africa, India, China, and elsewhere—designed by men, women, and collectives—signal the end of this era. There is no longer a dominant style, and perhaps there never will be again. With photos from recognizable architectural photographers, precise descriptions as well as plans from architectural firms, Philip Jodidio maps the diverse, sustainable architecture of the future. The private homes featured range from humble to luxurious. A beautiful home is always also a dream—and this book invites you to make it a reality.
