  • This review is about a variation of the product

Classic Kazantzakis, nice plot in the book but be careful there is the white edition and this one, I ordered this one and I got the white one because if you notice it says soft cover which means they have the white edition with the image from the paperback edition.. So it's better to get the already white one next to it which is also cheaper.

Description & Specifications

“Someone inside me suffers and fights for freedom.” In 1935, Nikos Kazantzakis traveled to Japan. The result of this journey was The Rock Garden, which is not simply a strange attempt to explain Asceticism or another Travelogue, but “the passionate novel of a European soul seeking to rejuvenate itself through contact with the enchanting, dangerous, and heroic soul of the Far East,” as he himself states.

This is a unique novel with a philosophical character, where the author reflects on life in an attempt to save his existence, while everyone around him struggles for their survival, once again capturing the spirit of humanity.

Above all, however, The Rock Garden is the only real journey that a person makes in his life: Around his soul and within himself. Japan, with its tremendous passions, submitted to a disciplined and cheerful form, will be my guide. An unknown country, everything will seem virgin to me, and the shock will be strong.

I knew only two Japanese words when I started for this great chrysanthemum: sakura, cherry blossom, and kokoro, heart. These two words, I told myself, would become the two keys that would open all the doors for me.

The new editions, featuring new covers and specially designed fonts, come with introductory texts and an afterword, offering more details about the work itself and the era in which it was written.
