Description

Description

"Cabinet of Natural Curiosities" is one of the greatest achievements in 18th-century natural history and remains one of the most valuable natural history books of all time. Dutch pharmacist Albertus Seba (1665–1736) was distinguished for his passion for collecting natural specimens from all over the world. His impressive collection of animals, plants, and insects gained international fame during his lifetime. In 1731, after decades of collecting, Seba commissioned the creation of careful and often theatrical illustrations for each specimen. With these methodical designs, a four-volume catalog covering the entire collection was organized, featuring strange and exotic plants, snakes, frogs, crocodiles, mollusks, corals, birds, and butterflies, as well as now-extinct creatures. This reproduction is derived from a rare, hand-colored original. The introduction provides information about the fascinating tradition of natural collections to which Seba's curiosities belonged.
