Our immense respect for Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797–1849) stems from his work "Atlas of Anatomy," which was a pivotal event in medical history and remains one of the most comprehensive and artistically illustrated anatomical works ever published. Bourgery began work on this impressive atlas in 1830 in collaboration with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782–1871), a student of the French painter Jacques Louis David. The first volumes were published the following year, but the completion of the work required nearly two decades of dedication. Bourgery lived long enough to complete this artistic endeavor, but the last of the eight volumes was not fully published until five years after his death. Bourgery's eight volumes cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques (exploring in detail almost all major operations performed during the first half of the 19th century), general anatomy and embryology, as well as microscopic anatomy. Jacob's stunning, hand-made, color lithographs are distinguished by their clarity, color, and aesthetic value, reflecting a combination of direct laboratory observation and illustrative research. The images remain unparalleled to this day, offering excellent anatomical oversight, not only for those in the medical field but also for artists, students, and anyone interested in the function and wondrous nature of the human body.
