Elected as the architectural book of the year by the International Film and Art Festival in Perpignan, France, Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed by Frédéric Chaubin explores 90 buildings in 14 former Soviet Republics. Each of these structures expresses what Chaubin considers the fourth age of Soviet architecture, an unknown flourishment that took place from 1970 to 1990. Unlike the decades of the 1920s and 1950s, no "school" or main trend emerges here. These buildings constitute a chaotic burst provoked by a declining system. Utilizing the waning monolithic structure, architects went far beyond modernization, either returning to the roots or freely innovating. Some of the bold completed projects dreamed by Constructivists, while others expressed their imagination in an expressive manner. The buildings are not only rare traces of a declining system but also testimonies to the vast geography of the USSR and the imminent end of the Soviet Union.
