The myth of Jean-Michel Basquiat remains strong. Synonymous with 1980s New York, the artist emerged in the late 1970s with the illegal tag SAMO, posting caustic comments and fragmentary poems on the city walls. He joined a burgeoning underground scene of visual arts and graffiti, hip-hop, post-punk, and DIY filmmaking, coexisting in a rapidly evolving artistic world. As a painter with a strong personal voice, Basquiat soon surpassed the established environment, exhibiting in galleries worldwide. His expressive style was based on raw figures and included words and phrases. His work was inspired by a full moon of personalities from jazz, boxing, and basketball, with references to ancient history and the politics of life on the streets—thus, when asked about his subject matter, Basquiat replied "royalty, heroism, and the streets." In 1983 he began collaborating with the most famous artist, Andy Warhol, and in 1985 he appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. When Basquiat died at the age of 27, he had become one of the most influential artists of his time.
