Some of the most impressive country houses in England are located in this gentle rural county. The Elizabethan Renaissance Kirby Hall, the Jacobean mansion at Apethorpe, the French-inspired Boughton of the late 17th century, the imposing Baroque Easton Neston by Hawksmoor, and the interiors of Althorp offer a charming retrospective of changing tastes through the centuries. They are complemented by smaller buildings of great character, most notably the creation of Sir Thomas Tresham: the eccentric and ingenious Triangular Lodge at Rushton and the poignant New Beild at Lyveden. Equally interesting are the churches, from the Anglo-Saxon Brixworth to the noble Gothic style Warmington, Rushden, and Finedon, and from All Saints, Northampton, one of the most impressive churches of the 17th century outside London, to St. Mary’s Church in Wellingborough by Comper. The main town, Northampton, boasts not only distinguished Victorian and Edwardian public, commercial, and industrial buildings but also the principal work in England by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
