The purpose of this book is to study the evolution and use of materials in painting through the preserved testimonies from each era, which are based on the materials and techniques used by the great painters. The written accounts that have survived are those that leaked out, as the guilds kept all the secrets of the great creators of Art.
We will historically place these materials, that is, when they appeared and how they were used through the ages, and we will deal with their composition and methods of preparation. We begin with the study of the painter Jan van Eyck, who marked the course of painting with the discovery of oil in 1410. Building upon this, subsequent painters, such as Antonello da Messina, Leonardo da Vinci, the Venetians, Rubens, Rembrandt, and others, introduced their own variations and techniques into painting, shaping the further evolution of Art to this day.
In the second part, the properties of pigments, mediums (binding materials), and various tools are analyzed—elements that are more essential today than at any other time, both for the artist who has at their disposal a plethora of techniques and means of expression, and for the art conservator.
We will refer to the industrialized materials that we use today in order to make comparisons and gain a deeper understanding of the old masters. Additionally, the reader will be able to create them in the workshop, as well as understand the techniques used with each material (pastel, egg tempera, oil, etc.). A selection of materials has been made with the rationale that those presented in the following chapters are the most well-known and fundamental for anyone engaging in painting.
Finally, we want to strongly emphasize here that this guide in no way can replace teaching in the workshop, where knowledge becomes practice live.
