This book tells the story of the civilization that has contributed more than any other to the way we live today in the West. It takes us on a journey across the globe and through four millennia, from the archaeological treasures of the Aegean in the Bronze Age and from myths about gods and heroes to today's political developments within the context of the European Union.
This journey is a story of inventions, such as the alphabet, philosophy, and science, but also of reinventions, as the Greeks have always adapted to catastrophic changes and found new ways to survive and leave their mark on the world around them, even today through the Greek diaspora across five continents.
“The long history of the Greeks is surely one of the richest, if not the richest, in all of world history. This book argues, among other things, that this history is not just about the Greeks, but it is a story for the world. As the renowned writer and actor Stephen Fry elegantly stated for the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution on March 25, 2021, ‘Greece will never owe the world as much as the rest of the world owes Greece.’ Yet very few people around the world properly appreciate this fact.
Even if they appreciate it, they may not fully understand how and why. To understand this, it is not enough to repeat the old saying about the ‘ancient ancestors.’ In fact, it is not sufficient simply to honor and study the culture of ‘Classical Antiquity,’ if we isolate this period of Greek history from the much larger narrative of which it is a part.
