A timely read that narrates the history of war from its prehistoric - perhaps even pre-human - beginnings to today's era of algorithms, nuclear weapons, and escalating tensions among global superpowers.

The vivid description and astute perspective of Dyer, who in a concluding chapter explores the most recent threat emerging after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the disruption of the global order, make it essential for today's reader who seeks to understand the role of war in long-term human history: why we wage it - and how we can stop it.

A quite interesting book that starts from the primitive era discussing every military aspect of human history. From the time of chariots, phalanxes, revolutions to total wars, it reaches up to 2022, obviously taking the Western view on the war in Ukraine without particularly exploring its true causes. A large part focuses on the threat of nuclear war, explaining the dynamics of nuclear weapon holders and the balance of power that arises from them. It does not dedicate much time to chemical weapons and hybrid threats or the arms race and the wear and tear caused by countries like Turkey with their constant violations (as described by Thucydides between Athenians and Spartans). I would say the style resembles Harari's Sapiens but oriented and specialized in wars.
