These discovered photographs from the Mart Walter collections were produced by the Detroit Photographic Company between 1888 and 1924. Using a photolithographic process that preceded autochrome by nearly 20 years, they offered people the first color photographs of the United States. From the rich ochres and browns of the Grand Canyon to the glitz of Atlantic City, these places became a visual delight not only for eyewitnesses but also for Americans across the country. With an air of discovery and adventure, the images gathered here are a journey through peoples, places, and time. They lead us through the vast and diverse landscape of North America, where we encounter its many communities, and above all, they transport us back to the United States over a century ago. In more than 600 pages, including fold-out spreads, this extensive panorama takes us from Native Americans to New York City’s Chinatown, from some of the last cowboys to the bygone era of Coney Island. As dazzling now as they were 120 years ago, these rare and remarkable images that brought America to Americans now bring America’s past into our present.
