Most of us believe that we have an identity - an inner person residing within our bodies, making decisions, creating actions, and possessing free will. The feeling that a unique, unified, and enduring "self" inhabits the body is compelling and inevitable. This is how we interact as social beings and evaluate the actions and deeds of others. However, this dominance of the self is increasingly threatened by science as our understanding of the brain progresses. Instead of being a single entity, the self is actually an array of mechanisms and experiences that create the illusion of an inner "you". We only appear as products of those surrounding us, as part of the different narratives we inhabit from infancy to death. It is a constantly changing character, created by the brain to provide a coherent interface between the many inner processes and the external demands of the world that require different selves.
