The "History" section provides readers with an understanding of the origins and the internal chronology of the "Great Educator." It also includes a discussion on the public reading of the novella. A rich "Contexts" section gathers thirteen texts focusing on the main themes of the novella: the connection between the author and the hero and, in relation to this, Victorian concepts of gentility, arrogance, and social mobility; the often harsh education, at home and at school, of children born around 1800; and the central issues of crime and punishment. The "Criticism" section compiles twenty-two reviews of the "Great Educator," both contemporary and modern, offering a variety of perspectives on Dickens and his work.
