The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a device installed in the exhaust system of modern diesel vehicles to reduce soot emissions, in order to comply with European emission standards. It primarily filters the toxic, microscopic particles emitted with the engine's exhaust gases and aims to reduce harmful particulate matter released into the atmosphere by 80%.

Because the filters have limited storage capacity, the captured particulates must be "burned" regularly and the DPF needs to be regenerated. If the accumulated soot "blocks" the filter's function, then the engine and turbo may cease to operate.
