In these poems, the joys and struggles of everyday life are set against the harsh politics of human existence. Starting from a hotel in the dark of a distant city, we travel through history and follow the memory of the Trail of Tears from the curve of the Tallapoosa River to an area near the Arkansas River. The rhythms of dance songs, blues, and jazz ballads sound everywhere. Lost ancestors are recalled. Resilient songs are born, even as they mourn the loss of their homeland. Joy Harjo, called "a magician and master" (San Francisco Chronicle), is in her best form in "Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings".
