Figure from Lord of the Rings: Gandalf on Gwaihir, 15 cm tall.
The Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains were immortal beings many times the size of ordinary birds of prey, flying so high that only the keenest eyes of the Elves could spot them against the blue sky.
Invisible and impervious to contact, their dominion over the sky was unparalleled until the Nazgûl of Sauron began to fly on their winged mounts during the War of the Ring. Even the Dragons of old could not compete with their aerial prowess, and their vision was so sharp that they could observe even the movement of a mouse on the mountainside. Orcs moved openly on the hills at great risk to their lives, while Wargs remained in the deep woods where the trees protected their paths.
In the Third Age, the most powerful of the Eagles was Gwaihir, the Lord of the Winds. A friend of Gandalf the Grey, he carried him on his back and often flew to his aid when the situation demanded it.
