The Greek Civil War contributed to the consolidation of the Cold War climate in Swedish public opinion in the early post-war years. It is thus interesting how the events in Greece are read by Swedish diplomacy, but also how the narratives of the Greek government and Western propaganda (and secondarily of the communist) "reach" the public opinion and are integrated into the political scene of Sweden. The study also investigates Sweden's compromise initiative at the UN regarding the Greek issue, an initiative that was part of the Social Democratic government's effort to "build bridges" between East and West, but was abandoned with the escalation of the Cold War. The issue of Swedish neutrality in the 1940s is reminiscent of the current debate sparked by the country's accession to NATO following the Russian attack on Ukraine. Based on thorough indexing of Swedish publications and Swedish and Greek diplomatic archives, the book therefore has a dual aspect: it constitutes a chronicle of the Greek Civil War from the unusual vantage point of a "third" foreigner, while it monitors the formation of foreign policy and the general political climate in Sweden during that period – aspects that are both rather unknown to the Greek public.
