On November 1, 1907, an urgent call arrived at the New Orleans police from the swamp and lagoon area to the south of the city. The people who had settled there, mostly primitive but good-hearted descendants of the Lafitte men, were at the mercy of terror from an unknown entity that had approached them unseen in the night.
It was evidently voodoo, but the most terrifying kind of voodoo they had ever encountered; moreover, some women and children had disappeared since the moment the ghastly drums began their endless beating somewhere deep within the haunted black forest, where no resident dared to venture.
There were delirious screams and eerie howls, blood-curdling chants, and dancing devilish flames; until, added the frightened messenger, they could bear it no longer.
