I run them on a Synology DS224+, I have installed 2 units since May and they have been working 24/7 nonstop in a NAS environment with continuous I/O load, Docker containers, backups, and generally a lot of read/write traffic. So far zero errors, clean S.M.A.R.T., no instability. In terms of reliability, I am absolutely satisfied, especially for home lab / power user use.
The only point that needs attention is the noise. The drives make a characteristic “scratching” sound during random access and at several times of the day the seek noise becomes noticeable. It’s not a failure, it’s a normal mechanical sound, but if the NAS is in the same room where you sit, you will hear it.
I have placed a thick mousepad under the NAS to reduce vibration transfer to the furniture and it does cut down the resonance a bit. Nevertheless, when there is heavy activity, you will still hear them. Anyone who wants absolute silence should go for SSDs or place the NAS in a more isolated area.

The price, of course, is now unattainable. It’s almost 1x higher compared to last May when I bought them. The market has gone crazy. Realistically, they will probably stay at these levels for 1 to 2 years, so if someone needs storage expansion now, it’s hard to avoid it.
Overall though, as a power user, they have not caused me any problems whatsoever and I trust them for a production home NAS setup.

Since then, I avoid Seagate like the plague! But after some research, the Ironwolf series seems reliable, and for the price I decided to give them a second chance. 1 year later, everything is fine so far.

I bought two for a home server. I have them in mergerfs on a Chinese PCIe SATA controller and consistently write at 110MB/s via Ethernet. Movies play instantly on the TV and seeking is also very fast. Temperatures reach up to 34c. I haven't noticed anything negative yet. I will also get a third one for parity.
edit: The third disk was also added to snapraid, the first sync is done at a steady 330MB/s.

From what I hear, I consider NAS to be the most reliable option out there. I wouldn't go to any other company for any reason. I already have four NAS devices here for years and simple barracuda in a docking station that have been through a lot for almost a decade and continue to work perfectly

This disk is used in a 10-year-old computer for file backup. It is very fast for this task and is not audible because the machine I have is not silent. Now, if you have built a computer that is completely silent, it is logical for the disk heads to be audible. Τωρα αν εσείς έχετε φτιάξει κανένα υπολογιστή που δεν ακούγεται καθόλου λογικό ειναι να ακούγονται οι κεφαλές του δισκου . Μην ξεχνάμε ειναι δίσκος NAS και όχι για υπολογιστή που στην τελική υπολογιστής που μένει ανοιχτός τα βράδια είναι λογικό να ακουγεται όταν υπάρχει γενικα ησυχια .

Ο δισκος κανει αποθηκευση και αντιγραφή και σβήσιμο αρχείων συνέχεια . Δεν ειναι για επαγγελματική χρήση αλλα για media και file backup. Δεν εχω κανένα πρόβλημα. Οπως ειχα πει και οταν τον ειχα αγοράσει δεν ακουγεται γιατι ο υπολογιστής μου ειναι παλιός και ακούγονται οι ανεμιστήρες οπότε δεν έχω κάποιο θέμα με φασαρία. Γενικά δεν είχα κάποτε πρόβλημα με seagate hard drives. Βέβαια υπάρχουν κατα καιρούς και μοντέλα που δεν ειναι τόσο καλα . Να κοιτάτε πάντα για προβλήματα που μπορεί να έχουν βγάλει σε άλλους . Εγώ θα τον ξανα αγόραζα. Αν και τώρα νομίζω θα έπερνα μεγαλύτερο . Ετσι θα αντικαταστήσω και κάποιους πολύ παλιούς που έχω. Ο μόνος φόβος όσο μεγαλώνουν οι δίσκοι τελικά σκέφτομαι οτι το NAS ειναι μονόδρομος όσο ακριβό και αν είναι

Ο δίσκος αυτός χρησιμοποιείται σε παλιό υπολογιστή 10ετιας για backup αρχείων . Ειναι πολύ γρηγορος για αυτή την δουλεια και δεν ακούγεται γιατι και το μηχάνημα που έχω δεν ειναι αθόρυβο . Τωρα αν εσείς έχετε φτιάξει κανένα υπολογιστή που δεν ακούγεται καθόλου λογικό ειναι να ακούγονται οι κεφαλές του δισκου . Μην ξεχνάμε ειναι δίσκος NAS και όχι για υπολογιστή που στην τελική υπολογιστής που μένει ανοιχτός τα βράδια είναι λογικό να ακουγεται όταν υπάρχει γενικα ησυχια .

Ο δισκος κανει αποθηκευση και αντιγραφή και σβήσιμο αρχείων συνέχεια . Δεν ειναι για επαγγελματική χρήση αλλα για media και file backup. Δεν εχω κανένα πρόβλημα. Οπως ειχα πει και οταν τον ειχα αγοράσει δεν ακουγεται γιατι ο υπολογιστής μου ειναι παλιός και ακούγονται οι ανεμιστήρες οπότε δεν έχω κάποιο θέμα με φασαρία. Γενικά δεν είχα κάποτε πρόβλημα με seagate hard drives. Βέβαια υπάρχουν κατα καιρούς και μοντέλα που δεν ειναι τόσο καλα . Να κοιτάτε πάντα για προβλήματα που μπορεί να έχουν βγάλει σε άλλους . Εγώ θα τον ξανα αγόραζα. Αν και τώρα νομίζω θα έπερνα μεγαλύτερο . Ετσι θα αντικαταστήσω και κάποιους πολύ παλιούς που έχω. Ο μόνος φόβος όσο μεγαλώνουν οι δίσκοι τελικά σκέφτομαι οτι το NAS ειναι μονόδρομος όσο ακριβό και αν είναι

I run them on a Synology DS224+, I have installed 2 units since May and they have been working 24/7 nonstop in a NAS environment with continuous I/O load, Docker containers, backups, and generally a lot of read/write traffic. So far zero errors, clean S.M.A.R.T., no instability. In terms of reliability, I am absolutely satisfied, especially for home lab / power user use.
The only point that needs attention is the noise. The drives make a characteristic “scratching” sound during random access and at several times of the day the seek noise becomes noticeable. It’s not a failure, it’s a normal mechanical sound, but if the NAS is in the same room where you sit, you will hear it.
I have placed a thick mousepad under the NAS to reduce vibration transfer to the furniture and it does cut down the resonance a bit. Nevertheless, when there is heavy activity, you will still hear them. Anyone who wants absolute silence should go for SSDs or place the NAS in a more isolated area.
In terms of performance for 5400rpm NAS-class drives, they do exactly what they should. Stable throughput, correct behavior in RAID, and generally optimized firmware for 24/7 operation.
The price, of course, is now unattainable. It’s almost 1x higher compared to last May when I bought them. The market has gone crazy. Realistically, they will probably stay at these levels for 1 to 2 years, so if someone needs storage expansion now, it’s hard to avoid it.
Overall though, as a power user, they have not caused me any problems whatsoever and I trust them for a production home NAS setup.

Μέχρι στιγμής μηδέν errors, clean S.M.A.R.T., καμία αστάθεια. Από αξιοπιστία είμαι απόλυτα ικανοποιημένος, ειδικά για home lab / power user χρήση.
Το μόνο σημείο που θέλει προσοχή είναι ο θόρυβος. Τα drives “γρατζουνάνε” χαρακτηριστικά σε random access και σε αρκετές φάσεις της ημέρας το seek noise γίνεται αισθητό. Δεν είναι failure, είναι φυσιολογικός μηχανικός ήχος, αλλά αν το NAS είναι στον ίδιο χώρο που κάθεσαι, θα το ακούς.
Έχω βάλει κάτω από το NAS ένα χοντρό mousepad για να μειώσω vibration transfer στο έπιπλο και όντως κόβει λίγο το resonance. Παρ’ όλα αυτά, όταν υπάρχει έντονο activity, πάλι θα “χτυπήσουν”. Όποιος θέλει απόλυτη ησυχία καλύτερα να πάει σε SSD ή να τοποθετήσει το NAS σε πιο απομονωμένο χώρο.
Σε επίπεδο performance για 5400rpm NAS-class δίσκους, κάνουν ακριβώς αυτό που πρέπει. Σταθερό throughput, σωστό behavior σε RAID, και γενικά optimized firmware για 24/7 λειτουργία.
Η τιμή βέβαια πλέον είναι απλησίαστη. Είναι σχεδόν 1x πάνω σε σχέση με τον περασμένο Μάιο που τους πήρα. Η αγορά έχει ξεφύγει. Ρεαλιστικά μάλλον για 1 με 2 χρόνια θα κινούνται σε αυτά τα επίπεδα, οπότε αν κάποιος χρειάζεται storage expansion τώρα, δύσκολα το αποφεύγει.
Συνολικά όμως, σαν power user, δεν μου έχουν δημιουργήσει κανένα απολύτως πρόβλημα και τους εμπιστεύομαι για production home NAS setup.
Let me say that Seagate in general has left me with psychological scars from their old Barracuda series—3 hard drives failed within months. I lost a lot of things!
Since then, I avoid Seagate like the plague! But after some research, the Ironwolf series seems reliable, and for the price I decided to give them a second chance. 1 year later, everything is fine so far.
Να πω πως η seagate γενικά μου έχει αφήσει ψυχολογικά με την παλιά τους σειρά barracuda 3 σκληρούς χάλασαν μέσα σε μήνες. Έχασα πολλά πράγματα!
Απο τότε αποφεύγω seagate σαν την χολέρα! Αλλά μετά από ψάξιμο η σειρά Ironwolf φαίνεται αξιόπιστη, και για την τιμή αποφάσισα να δώσω μια δεύτερη ευκαιρία. 1 χρόνο μετά ολα καλά μέχρι στιγμής.

I bought two for a home server. I have them in mergerfs on a Chinese PCIe SATA controller and consistently write at 110MB/s via Ethernet. Movies play instantly on the TV and seeking is also very fast. Temperatures reach up to 34c. I haven't noticed anything negative yet. I will also get a third one for parity.
edit: The third disk was also added to snapraid, the first sync is done at a steady 330MB/s.
Πήρα δύο για home server. Τους έχω σε mergerfs πάνω σε κινέζικο pcie sata controller και γράφω σταθερά 110MB/s μέσω Ethernet. Οι ταινίες στην TV παίζουν άμεσα και το seek επίσης πολύ γρήγορο. Θερμοκρασίες φτάνουν μέχρι 34c. Δεν έχω παρατηρήσει ακόμα κάτι αρνητικό. Θα πάρω και τρίτο για parity.
edit: μπήκε και ο τρίτος δίσκος σε snapraid, το πρώτο sync γίνεται με 330MB/s σταθερά.
