Corfu, 1937, during the dictatorial regime of Metaxas. From January to September, Odysseas Elytis attends the Reserve Officers' School, "isolated atop the Fortress," according to himself.
Many years later, a writer goes to the Island of the Phaeacians to learn how the poet spent those months there, serving alongside his Cypriot friend Evangelos Louizos. Who did he meet, apart from Lawrence Durrell, the doctor Theodoros Stefanidis, and some local writers?
How did he spend his free hours? What was his relationship with certain young aristocratic women? Also, what lies behind his poem "Eleni"?
"The Lovesick Elytis" is a novel about the young reserve officer with poetic visions and simultaneously a study of the man Elytis. It addresses both his political and romantic side.
For he is a romantic poet; the entire body of his poetry is romantic. Love permeates even "Aksion Esti," perhaps the most beautiful poem ever written in the Greek language. In an interview, he admits to his hedonism: "I was devoted 'to pleasures,' as Cavafy says."
